To welcome in the start of the new year I thought a refresh was in order. So over the past month I've been rejigging & redesigning my new website. The revamp should make updating a whole lot easier.
Along with my regular Illustration portfolio their is also an additional 'experimental' portfolio'. This is intended as a platform for me to experiment with alternative ways of creating images. I will be updating on a regular basis with paintings, prints, drawings & digital textures so watch this space. I've got a feeling 2012 is going to be a creative year.

Young Artist of The Year

I have the pleasure of exhibiting two pieces of work in this years 'Young Artists of the Year competition' currently showing at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle, NE2 1AN. November 18th - December 4th. Both pieces are from a series I produced a few years ago regarding observations in and around Felixstowe in Suffolk.

In my relatively short professional career it's only the second time I've been able to exhibit some of my work in the City I started my arts education. Hopefully sometime in the not so distant future I will find a way to exhibit some more.

Big thank you to the Biscuit Factory as I was unable to attend the opening night but if you look closely at the picture on the Young Artist Website you can just make out my images on the right.

Bit of a catch up blog as the last few months have been a bit hectic. I've been packing up boxes, living in other peoples houses, moving into a new house and unpacking again while still trying to make a living. So i'm pleased to announce that we are now all settled and creatively re-engaged.

A few interesting bits of news while I've been away.

AOI's annual which celebrates illustration excellence, Images 35 was published during August and I'm happy to say that one of my images is included, the one on the left below.

Alongside Images 35, I've also had some images included in Martin Dawbers 'Great Big Book of Fashion Illustration' published during September.

Both books are fantastic and full of immensely talented image makers. I can highly recommend picking both of them up.

J.M.Coetzee Disgrace

During last year I was commissioned by the Folio Society to illustrate a phenomenal, yet deeply unsettling novel by J.M Coetzee, 'Disgrace' The narrative is set in post apartheid South Africa and centres around the complex character of 'David Lurie'.
Lurie, a university lecturer who's affair with one of his students starts a sequence of events that make him question his own personal beliefs and forces him to come to terms with a changing society. Disgrace won the booker prize in 1999 and has more recently been made into a film staring John Malkovich.

Illustrating disgrace was intense; the novel themes are complex and brutally analyse issues such as race & gender within a volatile time in South Africa's history. For every illustration within the book their was at least another handful of options which didn't make it. I hope the illustrations I produced and the selections I made do justice to a phenomenal novel. You can now buy "Disgrace" through the Folio Society website here

Cantina

I occasionally dabble in a bit of graphic design, most of it is rubbish but sometimes I produce something I like. I've recently designed a logo for 'Cantina - Mexican food with no fixed abode'. A local company who specialise in popup Mexican food around the Woodbridge area of Suffolk. The first night was last Sunday (29th May ) and was a fantastic success.

Nursing Standard

A recent commission for Nursing standard magazine .

The article is about dignity volunteers. The volunteers liaison between patients, carers and family members after a decision is made that a patient will be allowed to die. The volunteers will help make the patients comfortable and visit the patients when family members are absent.

The image I've included here isn't the one that was chosen (you can see that in the magazine) but is the solution I preferred to a difficult article.

AOI Exhibition London

For anyone who's in London over the next few days I've got some work into the Association of illustrators Images 34 exhibition which is on from the 8th September – 14th September 2010 at the London College of Communication, Elephant & Castle.

Opening times: 10 - 5pm weekdays, 10 – 4pm, Saturdays, closed Sundays & Admission is free.

The work included in the exhibition is fantastic. I would highly recommend anyone interested in illustration to take a peek.

On trawling through some of the random images (some unused and some unfinished) I came across Beryl sitting on the pier in Felixstowe. Don't panic people's I have been busy... just with other stuff, trips to Paris, workshops with students and a current project I can't yet blog about.....more to follow..may be some roughs.

As well as working as a freelance illustrator / artist I also work in a school as support staff. It's a great environment to work in and often get asked to demonstrate how student's could potentially manipulate various images using Photoshop. Sometimes in groups , sometimes on a one to one basis but here are some of the outcomes over the past year, both my examples (some better than others) and some crazy student (year 9) animals from a surrealism project.

Scattercats Artwork

It's been almost a year since i created the first gig poster for the Scattercats, a local band based in Woodbridge Suffolk. As another gig draws near, another poster was called for (check out the link for more details) and so the creative cogs start to turn.

I've always liked creating the artwork for the band. It's different from my usual style, layering up photos with textures instead of using of my drawings. In the process of creating the newest poster I decided to look back over my previous offerings and see how they worked as a collecting of images. Here I've stripped back the text (an area in-which I always feel inadequate in dealing with) to leave just the artwork. The original photographs supplied by Gary James.

Its being a while since I've posted a great deal of new stuff on the blog, so here you are...some fruit and veg.... Or an Orange, a mushroom and a pepper to be more precise. I haven't really attempted to cover much food in my portfolio so thought i would give it a go.
For the majority of February I've being rejigging my physical portfolio (something I should do more often) and doing quite a bit of online self-promo stuff. Including a new portfolio over at contact-a-creative. More new work coming soon.

AOI Images 33 in Suffolk

AOI's Images 33 is on tour and is currently at Suffolk Universities new water front building in Ipswich. I went along to the opening night and was very impressed, It was great to meet Becky Brown and see some truly inspirational work including that of my former tutors Jill Calder and Jonathan Gibbs. I would highly recommend a look if you are in the area. Its on now until the 26th of March.

During November I got some great news that i had been selected to take part in the association of illustrators Images 34.

"Images is the UK's leading illustration competition, annual, awards show, and touring exhibition dedicated to showcasing the very best contemporary illustration published in the UK" .aoi

This will be the first time i have been selected to take part.....its also the first time i've entered so I'm quite chuffed. I believe it all kicks off in June / July time with an exhibition in London, followed by the publication of the Annual which will be delivered to various creative commissioners around the UK and beyond.

'PQ' (above) is the image which has been selected. Its an image I've been using for various self promotional formats over the past year. I will endeavor to keep you all informed as to the where and when...... until then enjoy a great New Year and a prosperous 2010.

As the sun sets on Animal House I'm pleased to announce it was a tremendous success. People came from far and wide to view the odd creatures that lurked within.

As the new day dawns all the Animals have scurried away leaving in its place an eclectic mix of works all restricted to 50x50cm in size. 'Square Route' begins on the 24th of October through to the 31st. Located In the same place as the last, Electric house, Graham & Oldham Artists Gallery, Ipswich Suffolk.

This week I fondly remembered an art trip I went on back in 1994 (ish) aged 14. Not exactly clued up on artists at the time, I remember being taken to a park in Yorkshire where some dude (Henry Moore) was showing some sculptures. It was a great day out and one of my first memories of drawing outside. I always remember it been quite a challenge drawing the organic shapes and practicing my tonal shading while trying to dodge sheep and their poo. The park was of course ' Yorkshire sculpture park' where a number of Moore's works where on show.

Some 16 years later the memories seemed to be revisited at Henry Moore's home and studios in Perry Green Hertfordshire. The Day was fantastic and the weather sublime. We visited his house and I became quite jealous of his many studios. We also walked around the grounds where a number of his sculptures from his personal collection lie. Taking plenty of photos and drawing some of the sculptures, remembering how fantastic and challenging they are to draw. If you haven't been to Perry Green I would definitely recommend it.

Yet another Exhibition I'm more than happy to be involved with by the gang at Lielow & Sketch. This one is taking place in Electric house, Ipswich ,Suffolk on the 10th - 18th of October. Entitled 'Animal House' each artist had to submit images based around either animal behavior or fictional/non-fictional animals. Here are my entries... 'Constable cows' (May blog 2009 'Constable country walks') and as yet Two untitled entries....one based around a recent news article about dog fighting and another about a incident my partner had as a child involving an aggressive dog. Needless to say she doesn't like dogs much and I've just been informed that the image scares her.... guess this ones not going on our wall then...

A new image, reworked from old drawings. I've wanted to play around with a few more fashion orientated images for a while. About three years ago I produced a number of drawings intended to be used for such purpose but never got around to doing anything with them, until now. This image should be the first of a few over the next couple of months.

A reworked image from a few weeks ago about ducks in Stowmarket. I must say i think i prefer the original, but Gemma prefers the new reworked version so i flipped a coin and it landed on heads.... the reworked version.

Stowmarket ducks

It has been said that in Stowmarket they are more ducks than people. Everywhere i travel around here i am greeted by flying ducks trying to knock me off my bike or have to stop in the car to let a duck family cross the road. I am ashamed to say that the only thing i can think of when i am greeted by a duck is how good duck tastes with cherry sauce....mmmmm.

Constable country walk.

A few weeks ago me and Gemma went for a wonder around Flatford Mill about half a hours drive away from where we live in Suffolk. The day was beautiful, and the scenery sublime. I took with-me some suitable artistic recording equipment (pencils / sketchbook and a camera) and started to draw. Looking out upon the landscape as Constable had some 200 years previous.. looking for inspiration.

After 30mins i quickly found myself becoming bored of the trees, bushes, streams and cottages. Its great... beautiful, but not for me... it just wasn't working. I then started to look around and watch how the visitors started to interact with the landscape and with each other.
Then, the place in which constable painted so many of his memorable and famous paintings started to come alive with the hustle and bustle of people. This was something i didn't expect, crowds of people walking through fields following the well trodden path towards Dedham village. It was then I found my personal interest i was looking for in this beautiful landscape.

I also found these consumer beef products quite interesting too... I've never been a one for drawing animals. So for the first time in public, here's some COWS...yumyum.
